Factors Affecting Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Mental Illness
Mun So-Jung

Lee Ye-Ji
Abstract
This study aimed to identify factors contributing to oral health-related quality of life in patients with mental illness. A questionnaire-based survey and an oral examination of 92 patients were conducted and analyzed with SPSS 18.0 program. The oral health-related quality of life was measured with the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The results of this study indicated a strong correlation between oral health-related quality of life and self-reported symptoms of xerostomia (p<0.01). The explanatory power of the multivariate regression model was 40.0%. In summary, improving oral dryness, and therefore oral health-related quality of life, is crucial amongst patients with mental illness. For this purpose, dental professionals should commit to updating and improving the current oral health examination procedures required for this
population.
